A Meaningful Event from the Nursing Department for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

he Department of Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ), together with undergraduate nursing students, organized an important awareness event as part of “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October.
The event highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, the life-saving role of breast self-examination, and the need to raise community awareness. Informative presentations, visual materials, and educational brochures were shared with participants during the well-attended event.
Within the scope of the program, the significant roles nurses play in the fight against breast cancer and the value of community-based education were discussed. The event also emphasized the impact of early detection, regular screening, and healthy lifestyle habits in the prevention and management of breast cancer.

Raising Awareness with the “Pink October” Theme
The activity was held at a specially decorated stand featuring pink details—the symbolic color of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons were distributed to participants, and pink-themed presentations were used to deliver strong messages of social awareness.
Faculty members of the Department of Surgical Nursing — Assoc. Prof. Gülşah Köse, Assist. Prof. Cemile Çelebi, and Lecturer Dr. Mehtap Çullu — emphasized that such awareness activities are crucial not only for students but also for improving public health literacy. They once again underlined the message: “Early diagnosis saves lives.”
The event was supported by Muğla Training and Research Hospital and the Department of Radiology. Deputy Chief Physician Dr. Eda Özlek and Assoc. Prof. Funda Dinç from the Department of Radiology visited the awareness stand, met with the students, and expressed their support for the initiative.
